Despite disciplined lifestyle (non- smoker and teetotaller), lung cancer is my bosom friend for about seven years now. Myself and my wife were residing in Pune the . During mid May- June 2016, symptoms like coughing and spitting phlegm intermittently for about a month made me to visit my family doctor who prescribed cough syrup and advised to get X ray of chest done and return with the report. Some inconsistencies though observed it never struck that it was cancerous growth. The visits to ENTs and other specialist doctors didn't give any clue about the dreadful lung cancer I have got. My youngest daughter Mrs Vasudha Karthik residing in Bengaluru, took me to the Pulmonologist Dr Padma Sundaram and quickly informed us that a tumor in the right 🫁 and referred to the Oncologist Dr Amit Rautan who advised a biopsy. The result was clear with ALK+ve and initially started on Targetted Therapy with Crizalk 600 mg twice a day. I continued on this for about 18 months. In July - August 2018, I stumbled and rushed to Manipal Hospital Bengaluru. Post MRI, Dr Amit Rautan found that it affected a few parts of the brain and recommended Radiation Therapy with 10 sittings. But, it was abandoned midway as I couldn't find any relief. Crizalk medication continued. But in September 2018, I became unconscious at home and rushed to Manipal Hospital Bengaluru. About four weeks of hospitalisation and change of medicine Alectinib 600 mg twice a day helped me bounce back with huge changes in me, particularly loss of muscle, strength to stand on my own and managing my personal needs became new problems. Still, with close supervision and support of my family and friends, I bounced back. Slowly, one event after another such as swimming, cycling resumed. Covid put an end to all the gain I made and at the end of two years, I fel tha I almost lost my faculties particularly swimming 🏊♀️ and cycling. Still, I am happy that I am able to do some errands for my family and be supportive of them. It is now almost seven years and the recent PET CT SCAN and MRI revealed that the cancer has been made dormant and inactive.
I believe that the following people and institutions need to be mentioned.
1. My unflinching faith in myself and the Almighty, my faith in my immediate family, particularly my wife Mrs Rajkumari Santhanam and my three daughters who stood with me like a rock of Gibraltar during the entire journey.
2. My trusted friends and colleagues
3. Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, for the timely intervention in treating me for my Lung cancer.
4. Thanks to modern interventions such as Targetted Therapy Immunisation Therapy etc., have increased the longevity of cancer patients.
5. Dr Amit Rautan, Chief Oncologist, Dr Nitin and the host of supportive staff
6. My past employer, NABARD and some of my colleagues like H.R.dave, former DMD, Mudgalji, CGM, Suresh, CGM and the other colleagues at various times during the critical period.
A message to share with all .
Faith is the strength . Hold on to it.
Lead a disciplined life and it will help to swim against the odds and reach the shore safely.
Repeat the sloka as many times as possible:
“Asmin Pararthman Nanu partha kalppey, Thuvamiththa Muththabidha Padma yonihi, Ananda Roopa Mama Roha Rasim”.of Narayaneeyam. This will cure the dreadful disease like Cancer.
My prayers for a cancer free world.

The doctor checked my son and gave medicine.
The story of a mother's journey to save her son, Alok’s life from a deadly disease called cirrhosis of the liver. This is a journey of struggle, determination, and the power of medical expertise and human kindness.
From Alok’s Mom,
Watching a child suffer is the hardest thing for any mother. I was feeling like I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulder. I felt hopeless and powerless to help your child conquer the problem. My son, Alok was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. I was unfamiliar with this condition or even heard of this disease. But I knew it was a serious condition when I saw how weak he had become.
Bright and energetic, Alok loved spending time with friends and attending school. Everything, however, morphed when a disease overtook him. He was severely underweight, and his limbs and eyes were swollen that he was unable to move. Watching him endure such suffering was heartbreaking. We took him to multiple hospitals, but no one seemed to be able to help him. Then, we met Dr. Nagendra Kumar V. R. and Dr. Rajiv Lochan from Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, and things started to look up for Alok.
Dr. Lochan says, "I remember when Alok first came to me, he was just a boy, barely in his teenage years. His life got turned upside down when he was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, along with a lot of fluid accumulation in his abdomen. He had Wilson's disease, and his liver was shrunken and damaged beyond repair." The doctor also arranged for us to meet with his team of doctors, who explained the procedure to us in detail.
Our financial struggle made it hard to carry forward the treatment. We were a poor family from Belgaum and we couldn't afford the expenses of the transplant. But fortunately, the doctors informed us that the Manipal Hospital had several ways to raise funds for the surgery. They had tie-ups with companies for social responsibility, and they also raised funds through online programs.
The next challenge was finding a suitable donor for my son. The doctor explained to us that we needed a living donor, as Alok's condition was too critical to wait for a deceased donor. We were relieved when I was deemed a suitable donor. It meant that we could move forward with the transplant without delay. The surgery itself was a success, thanks to the skilled hands of Dr. Lochan and his team. I was amazed at how quickly I recovered from the robotic donor hepatectomy.
Within days, I was up and about, caring for Alok as he recovered from his surgery. It was a difficult road to recovery, but we made it through. Alok's liver functions started to pick up, and he was able to return to school after just a few weeks. It was like watching a miracle unfold before our eyes.
Alok is now recovering and also follows checkups with the doctor regularly. He is doing quite well and hasn't had any complications since the transplant. I am grateful to the entire team at Manipal for their excellent care and support throughout Alok's treatment. It's an absolute pleasure to see Alok and I recover so nicely and quickly after such a devastating disease.
If there is one thing that I have learned from this experience, it is that hope can come from the most unexpected places. When we were at our lowest point, we found hope in the form of a dedicated team of doctors and the kindness of strangers. And that is something I will always hold close to my heart.
